The Story of the Beaulieu Jazz Festivals 1956-1961

Lord Edward Montagu's love of jazz inspired him to stage these pioneering events preceding modern music festivals, which attracted thousands of young fans to Beaulieu each summer, while enthralling and shocking the nation. Set in the social context of the times, Ken Robinson will present an evening of nostalgia for some and surprises for those who are too young to remember, with music to set toes tapping.

HEART OF OAK :: Meetings
Location : Beaulieu Village Hall
HEART OF OAK
The naval timber scarcity in the reign of George III
Presented by Gale Gould
During the eighteenth-century there was a belief that Britain was suffering a ‘great Scarcity of Timber’ and more particularly ‘that Sort of which our ships are constructed’. This led to proposals for parts of the New Forest to be enclosed for naval timber and the remainder to be ‘disposed of by public sale’. But was this modern history’s first instance of ‘fake news’? This illustrated talk by Gale Gould, from the University of Southampton, reveals how close the New Forest came to being lost to future generations

'Spitfire' film :: Meetings
:
The Friends of the Beaulieu National Motor Museum are screening the film ‘Spitfire’ in the Lecture Theatre of the museum on Saturday 12 January 2018 at 7.00pm. They have kindly invited members of the History Society to attend. Below is their announcement.
Tickets at £10 each are not available from the History Society, rather from Theresa Browning at the museum who asks you to order them by email using theresa.browning@beaulieu.co.uk. If there is a problem her phone number is given below.
‘Spitfire’ is a cinematic, epic tale of determination, vision and courage. It is the story of an aeroplane that was forged in competition, shaped as the war clouds gathered, and refined in the white heat of combat – going on to become the most famous fighter plane ever made. Credited with changing the course of world history, this is the story of the Spitfire – told personally in the words of the last-surviving combat veterans.
Watch breath-taking aerial footage from the world’s top aviation photographer John Dibbs and rare digitally re-mastered, archive footage from the tumultuous days of the 1940’s, when her power in the skies was unrivalled. The film is accompanied by a specially commissioned score by composer Chris Roe and an incredible soundscape of the famous Merlin engine. Founder and Chairman of ‘British Film Company’, Steve Milne, along with Co-Directors David Fairhead and Anthony Palmer, will present this striking and poignant feature documentary and will be available afterwards to sign the Companion book on the making of the film.
The evening will take place in the Collections Centre at 7.00pm. Tickets are £10.00 each and available from Theresa Browning on 01590 614792. There will be a small pay bar available before the talk and during the interval. The Motor Museum will not be open on this occasion.
