Virtual Annual General Meeting  ::  Meetings

:

It is very sad that our BHS activities planned for the last year had to be postponed due to Covid19.  During the year the Committee met online, and we were pleased to keep in touch through our August and October Newsletters.  We will of course resume our programme of meetings just as soon as circumstances permit.Procedure for holding an Annual General Meeting as required under our Constitution:  The Committee considers that as the business to be transacted is very simple, this can most appropriately be done as follows:

We will send you information in advance by email including the documents required for the AGM procedures and request any comments or questions from you before the AGM date.  There will be no virtual/online meeting for all members. The Committee will hold an AGM meeting to discuss your comments, resolve any issues, and then subsequently confirm to you all the proposed arrangements for the coming year.  This pragmatic arrangement will be deemed to fulfil the requirements for an AGM in accordance with our Constitution.

So here is the notification for you of the date of the virtual AGM:

1. Notice of BHS AGM date:  The BHS virtual Annual General Meeting 2021 will be attended by the Committee in the manner described above, on Friday 26th February 2021.

2. Nominations for Members to serve on the Committee: Any member wishing to stand for election to the committee, may do so provided they are nominated and seconded by two other members of the Society, and all three confirm this in writing with their contact details to the Secretary, by email to gillian.s@mac.com, by Thursday 18th February 2021.

3. Papers for the Annual General Meeting: Copies of the Agenda, the Annual Report, the Minutes of the last AGM, and the Treasurer’s Report will be sent by email to all members by Friday 19th February 2021.

We hope that these arrangements are clear.  After receiving the AGM papers, If anyone has any queries, comments or points they would like to raise before the AGM, please do so by email to gillian.s@mac.com

TRANSFORMATION - THE CREATION OF THE NATIONAL MOTOR MUSEUM  ::  Meetings

Location : Lecture Theatre, National Motor Museum

TRANSFORMATION - THE CREATION OF THE NATIONAL MOTOR MUSEUM

marking the 50th Anniversary 1972-2022

presented by Ken Robinson

at the National Motor Museum Theatre, Friday 1st July 2022 6:30pm (doors open 6pm)

The outstanding success of the Montagu Motor Museum in its first 20 years up to 1972, also created problems - which the plan to create The New Beaulieu Museum Complex was designed to resolve.  The ambitious plan met local resistance, but Lord Montagu was determined to found a new Charitable Trust for the collection, and to proceed.  Former Managing Director Ken Robinson joined Lord Montagu at Beaulieu in 1969 and was involved in all aspects of replanning, building and fulfilling Lord Montagu's vision to transform his Museum into the National Motor Museum.

This is a special presentation for BHS members that has been prepared primarily for Beaulieu and National Motor Museum staff as part of the 50th Anniversary celebrations.

Admission free to members. Guests and non-members £5. No booking required.

FLYING BOATS OF SOUTHAMPTON

presented by Colin van Geffen

Monday 7th November 2022 6:30pm (doors open 6pm)

at Beaulieu Village Hall SO42 7YA

Flying boats were an interesting but now little known form of luxury travel from WWI to the 1950s. Imperial Airways (later BOAC) flew globally from local bases at Hythe and Southampton. Flights to Australia, for example, stopped for refuelling and overnight stays at romantic places like Paris, Brindisi, Cairo, Karachi, Rangoon, Singapore and Darwin.

HIDDEN IN PLAIN SIGHT: Reminders of WW2 in the New Forest
presented by Marc Heighway

Many visual reminders of World War 2 can be seen in the New Forest: remains of airfields, foundations of buildings, bomb craters, and so on. Other remains cannot be seen, yet are still there.

The New Forest was a collecting and despatch point for the military and their equipment, by land, sea and air, throughout the war and especially towards its end.  Marc conveys his unique knowledge of the intriguing hidden items from these times.

SOUTHAMPTON MONUMENT AND VAULT   ::  Meetings

Location : St Peter’s Church, Titchfield

This is to make you aware of an interesting presentation.  Whilst it is not organised by Beaulieu History Society, it is closely associated with our history.  A flyer is attached.

SOUTHAMPTON MONUMENT AND VAULT
presented by Friends of St Peter’s Church, Titchfield

In September 2019 members of the Beaulieu History Society visited the village of Titchfield. The village is 25 miles by road from Beaulieu, in between Southampton and Portsmouth and near the Solent coast.  The visit included Titchfield Abbey and St Peter’s Church.

The connection between Beaulieu and Titchfield originates from Sir Thomas Wriothesley, Earl of Southampton.  Thomas was a loyal civil servant to King Henry VIII and as a result, after the dissolution of the monasteries in the 1530s, he was granted among other monastic lands the Abbeys of both Beaulieu and Titchfield.  Wriothesley ancestors are commemorated by the elaborate and captivating Southampton Monument and Vault in St Peter’s Church, Titchfield.

Because of this ancestral link, since the early 20th century the Montagu family of Beaulieu including Lord Montagu, have wished to be involved in the conservation of this monument.
